Local Community Resource List
Fortunate for us, living in New York City offers some of the best resources available and organizations with strong global ties.
1. Summer Search
Summer Search is an organization that provides high school students the opportunity to travel within the United States and abroad to not only discover other people and places, but to push themselves to the limit along a path of self-discovery.
At Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School, we have had over 20 young men and women be a part of this project that has truly been life-changing for our students.
2. Global Education Coalition NYC
Global Education Coalition NYC is "a network of NYC based organizations whose primary objective is to support educators in the New York Metropolitan area in creating globally competent youth for tomorrow's future." They have a list of resources on their website, along with offering professional development to teachers.
Global Education Coalition also has listings of jobs and internships for young people, which I plan on passing on to my former and current students. Although I missed the last professional development opportunity they offered, I hope to sign up for the next one to build on my knowledge of global education.
3. New York City Global Partners
New York City Global Partners, Inc. "connects the City of New York with other leading world cities by promoting exchange among policymakers and citizens alike- now representing 102 cities and growing."
I would like to use the "innovation exchange" portal on their website which is a list of successful projects around the world and a comparison of data between the United States and other cities world-wide. For example, you can select three different countries around the world, including New York City, and compare statistics in a host of different categories. One of these categories is the economy, which would be particularly helpful in my Economics class.
4. The Institute of International Education
The Institute of International Education "is among the world's largest and most experienced international education and training organizations." Their mission "is to advance international education and access to education worldwide." IIE has a wide range of opportunities listed online for both teachers and students, including scholarships and fellowships.
IIE offers study abroad scholarships, which I will encourage my former and current students to apply for. Many of my students do not have the financial means to travel abroad, so this would be an excellent resource for them.
5. Global Classrooms Model U.N.:
Bridging the Education Gap and Creating Global Citizens
Global Classrooms Model U.N. "engages students through the exploration of international issues and institutions, cultivating global literacy, life skills, and the attitudes necessary for active citizenship." Online, there are a series of templates and resources to assist teachers in participating in Model UN in their schools.
Participation in this program is something I am going to attempt in my classroom, especially being as we could potentially visit the U.N. on a school trip.
