First we went to the Mausoleum of Mouley Ismail, which was once a mosque but is now a tomb, which is why I was able to enter as a non-Muslim. It was absolutely beautiful and peaceful.
Next we visited Habs Qara, or Kara Prison, which was an underground prison where there were allegedly 50,000 slaves kept in the 11th century, the majority of which were captured Christians. I don't know too much about this, but am anxious to learn more.
We then saw the Bab Mansour gate, next to El Hadim Square and souk (market), where we saw many goods available. We went to the cafe on the roof of a building in the square where we could people watch those below us. There was also a wedding going on there, which the students brought us in to look (but we definitely felt like wedding crashes!). Moroccan weddings are unbelievable and last several days...we have been told if you ever get a chance to attend a Moroccan wedding to do so and I wish one day to have that opportunity!
We then went to the ALC, where we met Khadija's class and enjoyed the music club. These students were so talented and played many musical numbers for us.
Overall this was one of my favorite days by far. The students showed us the true meaning of hospitality and were so welcoming and made us feel at home. I loved touring the old city or Medina with them on such a beautiful day and I hope we keep in touch.
